Brief Introduction of Labor Economics Institute


Labor Economics Institute of Zhongnan University of Economics and law is an opening professional academic organization, the proceedor of it is Labor Economics Institution of Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics, which was founded in 1992. Prof. Chen Yuandun served as the first chief of institute. In 2000, Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics was combined with Zhongnan University of Politics and Law, reestablished the Labor Economics Institute, and appointed Zhang Haifu as the chief of institute. At present, incumbent chief of institute is associate Prof. Wang Changcheng.

Social security was founded in 1997, the research direction if it are complete, it emphasize in using multi-disciplinary knowledge and combining the theory with practice, take the integrated way of teaching scientific research synthetically and social service. Furthermore, we have established the extensive friendly cooperation relationship with Labor and Social Security, National Ministry of Personnel, the State Economic and Trade Commission, brother universities and colleges and scientific research institutions, and large and medium-sized enterprises. In addition, we also build friendly cooperation relationship with the countries, such as U.S.A., Canada, Holland, etc.

Labor Economics Institute of Zhongnan University of Economics and law is one of the first unit that launched teaching and research of labor economics in the national higher institutions, which founded in the 50s of 20th century. As far back as 1995, our school has opened the research direction of population and labor plan management under the specialty of national economy plan management. During ¡°the Culture Revolution¡±, this specialty and its branch research, population and labor plan management were affected. Most teachers were also forced to stop teaching. National economics specialty (the former is national economy plan management) were authorized by the State Council to enroll the postgraduate in 1982, we set up the study direction of labor and compensation and opened the courses such as compensation theory and practice in socialism, Labor economy and management etc. After more than ten years¡¯ construction, labor economics was approved by the State Council as the authorized unit of master¡¯s degree in 1998. In the same year, we set up supervisor group of labor economics led by Asst. Prof. Wang Changcheng, begin to recruit postgraduate in 1999. We won the authorization of labor economics ph.D. in 1999 and begin to enroll doctoral graduate in 2001. We have taken in the 5th year master degree candidate and the 2nd doctoral candidate in this specialty.

Zhongnan University of Economics and law has a good research tradition, which pursues the idea of ¡°Opening, Pragmatizing, Strictness and Seeking for the truth ¡± all the time, we have achieved a lot of fruits in this field and have won the broad influence within domestic and abroad. In the past 5 years, our faculty have presided and finished 2 items with national science fund project successively, 8 items with national social science fund project, 1 important bid project with the base of Arts & sciences of Education Ministry, 7 items of provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects, such as the provincial social sciences fund and Arts & Social sciences planned project of Education Ministry Etc. We also have obtained lots of multiple international collaborative project subsidies, such as American National Science Foundation, Ford¡¯s fund, etc. Edited 2 interconnected textbooks of national-level, published 14 monographs and 368 papers in domestic and international academic journals, such as ¡°China¡¯s social science¡±, etc. Among them, 5 items are provincial and ministerial lever awards (government¡¯s award), 2 items are research are research findings (government¡¯s award) of Arts & social science (economics) of university of Education Ministry.

At present, there are 13 researchers in our institute, in which, Prof. Accounts for 35%, Asst. Prof. 50%, lecturer 15%, researchers under the age of 45 are all doctors (including the doctor studying). The main researchers including: Prof. Zhang Haifu, Prof. Yang Yunyan, Prof. Chen Quangming, Prof. Ma Zhenjie, Asst. Prof. Wang Changcheng, Asst. Prof. Yuan Heping, Asst. Prof. Jiang Wenli, Prof. Zeng Fanhua, Prof. Chen Hao.etc.

Labor economics institute of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law has the following research advantages in the labor economics field.

1. This kind of institute is not popular in Zhongnan areas. The research strength in this field are less than the others in the whole country, yet our school take up teaching and study in this field relatively early, the overall research ability are stronger and research level are higher than our counterpart. In fact, we has become the center and the leader that engaged in education and research in this field in Zhongnan areas and rank in the top in the similar research field of our country.

2. Our institute keeps friendly cooperation relationship with the labor department of national and relevant provincial & municipal government as well some large-medium scale enterprise and institutions permanently. A lot of professors take on visiting researcher, consultant of government department, academic committee member, and experts, senior consultant etc. At the same time, our institute also engaged some part-time professors and researchers to fill our research strength. We always keep the good research style of theory combining practice in the field of labor economics.

3. Labor economics has already entry the senior level in this field, and is playing the key role in it. For instance, two persons in our institute have joined the China Labor Institute, which is rare in the national higher school; As for Chinese sub-network of Asian human research development network, only five universities join in it in the whole country, our school is one of it. In addition, we have also joined many academic organization extensively such as China Labor Institute Compensation Professional Committee, the branch institute of Labor and Social Security Teaching, the Labor Institute of Zhongnan areas, the Labor Institute of Hubei province and Wuhan city, etc. and take charge of the important position in it, which make our teaching and research of labor economics always stand in the front of the subject development.

4. We have the rich experience of discipline construction and amount academic materials, Labor economics institute almost have 2000 collected books including Chinese and foreign books and professional journals, which have formed the overall and systematic materials.

The distinctive directions that Zhongang University of Economics and Law have formed in the study of labor economics are as follows:

1. Employment and labor market. After many years¡¯ construction, this research direction has formed rearrangement of employment system and the innovative study of labor market system, labor force flowing in urban and rural areas overall employment strategy, information collecting and organizing of labor market, etc.

2. Income distribution and design of compensation scheme. In this field rely on the good foundation that lied by our senior experts and professors, as well our current research strength, we have achieved the top fruits in domestic similar research on the aspects of fair distribution theory and policy, income level and disparity of residents, human capital gaining, design and diagnosis of compensation scheme, labor cost, etc. These researches have played an example for our country to push the theory research and reform in this field.

3. Labor relations. Rely on the advantage of the integration of finance & economics and politics & law, the direction of labor relations has formed the distinctive character on the aspect of labor relation coordination mechanism, adjustment mode of labor relation, trade union and group negotiation, labor security of labor relation and labor dispute settling.

4. Human capital. The main research in this field are the obtaining of pricing, trading of human capital, as well human capital property rights and its protection, etc.
